Black Tower Elder
Sambucus nigra 'Eiffel01' PPAF
A dramatic new Black Elder with a sturdy, columnar form, jet-black foliage, and masses of two-tone pink blooms all summer long. The large leaves are neatly serrated and slightly incurled along the long edges, creating more depth for the shrub, and the branching goes right to the ground.
The new foliage emerges celery-green, for fantastic contrast. And the flat-topped flower clusters, which appear solid pink from a distance, are revealed to be white at the base and deep rosy-pink to carmine at the top.
In autumn the flowers are replaced by black berries, beloved by birds. Wonderfully disease-resistant, this 6- to 8-foot-high, 3- to 4-foot-wide shrub appreciates a good pruning after the flowers pass, but needs little other care to keep its unique shape, lush foliage, and heavy bloom year after year.
Space these plants 3 feet apart for solid coverage, and be sure to cut them to about a foot from the ground in late winter. They'll come back bushier and better than ever before -- and in less time than you would have believed possible! Enjoy this handsome shrub. Zones 3-9.

Plant in sun or shade; the more sun, the denser the foliage, flower and fruit. Sambucus is not fussy about soil, but does best in a moisture-retentive loam enriched with organic matter.
Mulch after planting and thereafter in spring to help retain moisture and maintain a cool root run. Water during periods of drought. Each year, in late winter, prune back to 12 to 14 inches or where ample buds are present to produce vigorous spring growth.
A Tradition of DistinctionSince its founding in 1920, Wayside Gardens has brought the rarest and highest-quality plants to the garden market. Wayside was founded in 1920 by two acclaimed growers who came together to pursue their shared vision of marketing all high-end plants for the serious garden enthusiast. Originally located in Mentor, Ohio, Wayside Gardens swiftly grew a reputation for the highest-quality plants and the most sophisticated clientele. In 1975, Wayside was purchased by the Park Seed Company, and moved to Hodges, SC. The company has flourished since then, growing to become an undisputed leader in rare and unique plant growing.
Unparalleled SelectionWayside's horticulturists travel the world in search of new and unusual plant cultivars and proudly offer the garden industry’s most sophisticated selection of high quality and rare perennial plants, bulbs, trees, shrubs, roses, vines, and indoor plants.
