With foliage no more than 3 feet tall and plumes to only 5 or 6 feet, this rare, dwarf form of the classic Pampas Grass is suitable for many situations, even small gardens.

Flowering the first year after planting, its late summer plumes add distinction when used in the border or as an architectural accent, and make showy dried arrangements.

Completely hardy to Long Island, 'Pumila' withstands heat and drought once established. Zones 6 (with protection) -10.

This is indeed a smaller selection of Cortaderia, but it still has the bad habits of its larger relatives. It dies out in the middle in short time. Its leaves are razor sharp. Like most grasses, 'Pumila' is a very hardy plant. It's tolerance of adverse conditions rivals many other plants at the home gardeners disposal. With that being said, the home gardener should consider other grasses in place of 'Pumila.' Still, 'Pumila' is the best choice if a Pampas Grass is high on an individual's want list.
