Daphne odora 'Zuiko Nishiki'
Evergreen and rounded, it offers lovely year-round color for partial shade.
Dark rosy-pink buds arise early in winter, offering their own beauty against the long, glossy deep green leaves. They burst into pink-and-white blooms, releasing a fantastically sweet, rich scent that lingers delightfully in the shade garden. Who would imagine that one of the most aromatic seasons could be late winter?!
'Zuiko Nishiki' reaches 3 to 4 feet high and wide, nicely rounded and well-branched, with a more upright, less sprawling habit than many other Daphne. It thrives in rich, well-drained soil. It is a must-have for gardens in the south and Pacific northwest, as well as any other climate where the winters are mild.
This Japanese cultivar combines beautifully with Itea, and makes a nice backdrop to Helleborus. Find a place of honor for it in your shade garden this season. Zones 7-9.
