Himalayacalamus falconeri is another beauty from the cool foothills of the Himalayas, and is one of the most attractive of the clumping bamboos, with its vivid and random colors. It has dark green striping on red and yellow canes or yellow and lavender-pink stripes on green stalks! Masses of small, feathery leaves are held atop long, slender branchlets. The culms reach 20 to 30 feet tall and up to 2 inches wide, the whole plant spreading to about 10 feet wide.
Candy-Stripe Bamboo does best in part to full sun as it loses its red and lilac tints if grown in deep shade. It does well in moist, sandy or clay loams, preferring areas that do not have high heat and humidity. It does especially well in cool coastal areas, and is hardy to 15 degrees F. If it is grown indoors, it's recommended that it be placed in an atrium or greenhouse. Zones 9-10.
