(Synonym: C. p. filifera 'Sungold')
The most sun-tolerant Japanese Falsecypress we have ever grown, this dwarf is a beautifully shaped, richly colored, highly expressive addition to any setting. Its wispy stems, elegantly weeping, and its seasonal color changes keep it interesting every day of the year, a claim few other trees can make.
In spring the new growth appears in bright shades of gold, standing out among the old growth brilliantly. Very finely cut, it creates a cascading fountain of sunny hues and naturally rounded form. The strongest yellow will be in full sun, and 'Sungold' will keep these tones for several weeks, gradually turning lime-green beginning at the base of each leaf. Expect the tips to keep their golden accents until summer!
With summer, the foliage turns lime-green, an arresting shade that always gets attention in the sunny to partly shaded garden. By autumn, the yellow tones are back, and they remain throughout winter. Brilliant!
Reaching just 3 to 5 feet high after 10 years, 'Sungold' may be pruned to remain small or allowed to reach its mature size and broad, flat-topped shape. In addition to its excellent resistance to sunburn, it is untroubled by most pests and diseases. Easy, elegant, and always "in season," this is a dwarf accent no landscape should be without! Zones 3-7.
