The perfect accent or specimen for that focal point in the garden, this Hinoki Falsecypress offers twisty, eccentric foliage that looks particularly interesting in spring, when the new growth emerges light green and often "cockscombs," creating little ridged additions to the end of each branch.
The foliage is fern-like and lush, remaining green through winter and giving this tree a fresh, vibrant look. Twisted and chaotic, it appears to be growing in all directions. This tree is fairly slow growing, adding just 6 to 8 inches a year, and the measurements given here (10 to 12 feet tall and 6 feet wide) represent a decade's growth. A nice size for the home landscape, it thrives in any moist, well-drained soil, and doesn't mind a bit of humidity. Protect it from strong, drying winds.
New spring foliage is particularly effective, the cockscombs forming little splayed sprigs at the tips of the branches. It is a unique effect, made even more prominent by its celery-green coloration. Give this fine tree a special spot in the landscape this season. Zones 4-8.
