This splendid semi-double is coming up for its 20th anniversary, and if the oohs and ahhs we've heard about are anything to go by, it is already a classic. And why not? Where else can you find such luminous color, shading from appleblossom-pink at the base of each petal through rich shades of rose-, coral-, and peach-infused pink. The large central cluster of golden stamens waves like a sea anemone on these exquisitely incurved, absolutely huge blooms. Imagine them in the garden or as part of an indoor arrangement. They are simply breathtaking!
A very early blooming peony, 'Coral Sunset' is an ideal choice for southern and southwestern climates, where short springs and hot summers can rob later-blooming peonies of a few weeks of glory. However, it is every bit as cold-hardy and eager to please in northern zones, where it just blooms and blooms. All peonies are long-lasting, but 'Coral Sunset' seems to have a special hold that outlasts most others!
The blooms open from bright rosy-red buds on plants 30 to 36 inches high and 24 to 30 inches wide. They thrive in full sun but can tolerate a bit of shade in warmer areas. Very adaptable and resistant to everything from heat to drought, 'Coral Sunset' is a garden treasure, destined for a long and happy life in the border or as a specimen. Peonies live and bloom for decades, and this variety is vigorous and free-flowering, determined to live life to the fullest. Introduced by Wissing-Klehm in 1981, it has never been bettered. You will enjoy it for countless years to come. Zones 3-8.
