Little Bluestem Grass has an elegant new look! 'The Blues' is a fine improvement over the beloved tallgrass prairie plant, offering blue-tinted leaves and magnificent fall color changes. Easy to grow and untroubled by pests, this native perennial is one of the easiest plants to grow in any garden, and its many colorful changes make it one of the most exciting, too.
In spring this grass emerges in little clumps of narrow (1/4-inch wide) leaves of green with a strong blue cast. The habit may remind you of brooms, and is ideal for large open areas such as meadows, bare banks, and other sun-soaked spots. In late spring and early summer, pink stems arise, topped from summer through fall with bold purple-bronze blooms 3 inches high.
As soon as the cooler weather of fall arrives &@8212; and while the plant is still topped by blooms — the blue-tinted foliage turns a rich russet-red. The flowers begin to pass, almost immediately replaced by airy silvery-white seedheads, equally as showy as the flowers and fine for dried arrangements indoors. Within a month or two 'The Blues' will have turned from blue-green and purple-bronze to russet-red and white — quite a different look indeed!
When not in bloom, 'The Blues' is just about a foot high. Add the flowers, and this fine grass is 2 to 4 feet tall. It spreads about 12 to 18 inches wide. Very adaptable, it is a fine addition to gardens from one end of the country to the other. Capture a piece of the vanished tallgrass prairie — with modern embellishments! — for your sunny landscape this season! Zones 3-9.
