(Formerly Fargesia angustissima) This dainty, very small-leaved Mountain Bamboo offers splendid color changes and an elegant arching habit. Evergreen and quick-spreading, it is a fine choice for wide open spaces as well as large containers. The new spring shoots arise flushed with deep purple and covered with powdery white. Much of these colors remain as the shoots rapidly grow, sporting extremely small foliage. These leaves are just 2 inches long and scarcely 1/4-inch across, with an airy texture that lends a billowy look to the display. Especially effective in containers (where its height and spread can be greatly controlled), B. angustissima is an elegant presence in partial shade.
But do not let its petite container size or miniature leaves fool you: this is a very hardy, fast-spreading Mountain Bamboo, native to the Himalayas and very adaptable. It forms a clumping plant that can reach 18 feet tall and 4 feet wide within just a season or two, and it is always eager to spread. In the wild, it is the food upon which Giant Pandas feast, and is happy in the partial shade provided by tall evergreens.
B. angustissima makes an excellent barrier or screen, effectively acting as a windbreak, creating a perimeter "wall," or edging a building. It is hardy to 15 degrees F and may be cut back at any time to restrain its growth. Unexcelled in large containers, where its arching habit shows to best effect. Zones 7-11.
