Each leaf is an individual work of art on this rare and very prized perennial! Beginning in spring and continuing well into summer, the dark green foliage is marked with cream and yellow. And just as the midsummer heat begins to darken the leaves to a more uniform green, striking greenish-white blooms arise!
'Sunningdale Variegated' is all the rage in England, and one look at this charming plant tells you why. Measuring 18 to 24 inches tall and 18 inches wide, it's just the right size for the partly shaded perennial bed, border, edging, or patio display. The blooms are terrific in dried arrangements, and the foliage adds a distinctive look to almost any color combination. In very hot weather, it may darken to a uniform deep green, but will not burn!
'Sunningdale Variegated' is a good companion to distinctive shrubs such as the variegated Weigela My Monet™, as well as shade-loving perennials like Heuchera 'Ginger Ale'.
Like most Astrantias, 'Sunningdale Variegated' is not fussy about soil type, and is quite cold hardy. Space plants 12 to 15 inches apart. Zones 4-8.
