Plant Patent #17,044
One of the very few Hosta in the world to boast such patterning, 'Independence' boasts scattered freckles, specks, and spiderweb-thin lines of deep green all along its creamy-white margins. This variegation is present not only in spring, but persists despite hot sunny weather into summer!
A Designer Hosta™ from Walters Gardens, 'Independence' comes by its good looks honestly. It is a reverse sport of the popular 'Revolution,' with its galaxy of spots and flecks as a delightful bonus. Vigorous and well-shaped, it forms a rounded mound about 22 inches high and 18 to 20 inches wide, topped with rather large, pale lavender blooms on 26-inch stems in midsummer. The ideal size for containers as well as the border, it deserves a prominent place in the landscape, where its spectacular patterning can be enjoyed up close.
A good companion to other Hosta from solid 'Fragrant Blue' to 'Stiletto,' 'Independence' also combines beautifully with hardy ferns, Heuchera, and other other shade lovers. Like all Hosta, it is very tolerant of heat, humidity, cold, and drought, thriving in adversity and improving each year in leaf substance and color show. Divide it every few years for more plants, or let it grow into a splendid mature specimen. Very long-lived and easy to grow, it is simply indispensable for the garden. Zones 3-9.
