A popular subject for bonsai, 'Akita-yatsubusa' is a very slow-growing natural dwarf with absolutely breathtaking color changes on long, elegant, deeply divided foliage. Every few weeks from spring through fall, the leaves assume a new hue, casting elegant spidery shadows on the garden floor. It makes a superb specimen for the patio, front porch, or garden focal point, and stands out in any setting as a tree of exceptional color and form.
Just 3 feet high and wide at maturity, 'Akita-yatsubusa' begins spring by unfurling bright pinkish-red leaves with 5 to 7 long, elegantly serrated lobes. The color may remind you of watermelon, and remains for quite some time before yielding to pale green in the center, yellow at the tips. By the time summer is in full force, the leaves have assumed a uniform dark green, but with the first hint of autumn chill the green is replaced by zingy orange and radiant red hues. Spectacular!
The brown stems of this tree accentuate the changing colors, and the habit is very dense, thanks to good natural vigor. This Japanese Maple thrives in full sun in northern climates, partial shade farther south, and once established is quite tolerant of drought, heat, and humidity. It doesn't mind transplanting, so if it is not happy in the first location you select for it, have no hesitation in relocating it! Or find a large, beautiful container to create a permanent home for this dimunitive beauty. Zones 5-9.
