'Thunderhead' is a rare, top-ranking, American-selected cultivar of the Japanese Black Pine. It is vigorous but compact (6 feet by 5 feet in 8 to 10 years), with glossy, dark green needles that contrast wonderfully with white buds in winter, an effect even more exaggerated with its emerging white candles in spring.
A very accommodating Pine that grows virtually anywhere, 'Thunderhead' thrives even in poor sandy soil. Zones 5-9.
