Bold form and exquisite texture distinguish this elegant Weeping European Larch, a stunning specimen or focal point in the garden. The foliage changes hues with the seasons, then sets cheery cones and drops for winter, revealing an intricate "weeping" skeleton! Utterly one-of-a-kind, this cascading tree is more cold-tolerant than upright Larches and a carefree joy in the home landscape. The show begins in early spring, when the well-branched tree leafs out a light, celery green. The color gradually darkens as the weather warms, then turns brilliant golden-yellow for fall. Masses of cones follow on mature trees. Quite a display for the front yard, focal point of the patio, or even the foundation.
Unlike some weeping trees, this Larch stays neat and columnar, thanks to its straight-up-and-down trunk. Stake it to 5 or 6 feet tall, then let it tumble downwards. It's a nice size for a variety of settings. 'Pendula' thrives in full sun in the north and partial shade in the south, and is far more resistant to ice damage than other Larches. No wonder it's so rare and highly prized!
Set trees about 4 feet apart in any well-drained garden soil. Hardy in zones 2-7a.
