Renowned for its dwarf habit, superior cold hardiness, and longer-lasting blooms, 'Cavatine' is a broadleaf evergreen shrub suitable for most any landscape. Its white blooms, shaped like tiny lanterns, dangle fetchingly from 3- to 6-inch racemes, while its smaller foliage is dense and compact. Very low maintenance, it is a dependably beautiful performer in garden or container.
Each flower is less than an inch wide, but they appear by the dozen on long, pendulous stems. In warm climates the bloom often begins before winter ends, and continues into spring. Many Pieris cultivars offer flowers best described as fleeting, but the abundant flowers of 'Cavatine' remain for many weeks. A fully blooming shrub is a spectacular sight in the early-spring landscape!
Bred in Holland, this yakushimanum type flowers a bit farther north than most others, and is certainly among the most floriferous in the family. Mounded and dramatic at bloomtime, it makes a fine specimen, as well as a border standout. And it needs no pruning, but if you need to shape it, do so directly after flowering, before the summer growth of new buds. Easy to grow in any well-drained soil. Zones 5-9.
