The master of horror movies would have appreciated this nearly black Daylily named in his honor, with its giant, arresting blooms and free-blooming nature! Bela Lugosi is one of the very largest and most impressive Daylilies you can find, and it complements almost every other color in the garden with its tones of midnight purple and lime green! These flowers measure a full 6 inches wide, with exceptionally thick petals that keep the color from draining or bleaching when the summer sun gets intense. Nicely ruffled at the edges (for an even darker, velvet-black look!), these flowers arise very freely on well-branched plants 32 inches high and 2 feet wide. The heaviest show is in midsummer, keeping your sunny garden colorful for weeks!
Like most Daylilies, Bela Lugosi is wonderfully resistant to drought, heat, and humidity, and thrives in any soil, even those of poor fertility. It can be sheared mercilessly in late fall, only to return with fresh beauty in spring. Very long-lived and as tough as nails, it is one of the few perennials that I would truly call care-free.
Space plants 24 inches apart in full sun and moist, well-drained soil, and water well the first year to get them established. Hardy in zones 4-9.
