Boasting a new shade of red for every season from spring through fall, this robust Japanese Maple is a strong grower with an upright habit, dramatic black-veined foliage, and substantial leaf texture, which enables it to withstand sun, wind, and even humidity better than others.
Deeply cut, rippled, and veined, the leaves on this tree open a brilliant shade of maroon for spring, then darken to purple in summer, their veins still neatly outlined. In autumn, they acquire neon shades of orange and red, remaining on the tree for several weeks before dropping. All shades of red and purple have their season on this tree, and the result is a spectacularly beautiful focal point for any garden setting.
'Purple Ghost' is a slow grower, reaching just 8 feet tall and 4 feet wide after about 10 years. Its eventual size is 10 to 15 feet high and 8 to 10 feet wide, but it remains petite for quite some time, and is naturally symmetrical.
All of the 'Ghost' Japanese Maples are lovely, but 'Purple Ghost' offers a more garden-worthy performer, especially in rough climates. Its thicker leaves and richer color keep it looking its best longer than most, and it is often one of the last A. palmatum cultivars to drop its leaves in the late autumn.
'Purple Ghost' was introduced by Buchholz Nurseries as part of the Flora Wonder™ Collection. We recommend it especially for gardeners in zone 9, where many Japanese Maples struggle. Zones 6-9.
