This chameleon of a little tree will keep your garden beautiful and ever-changing all spring and summer! The new foliage is rose, quickly changing first to hot pink and cream and then to chartreuse. A very slow grower that's just perfect for bonsai, small spaces, or container gardens, 'Geisha' will delight you for many years! The small, deeply lobed leaves on this tree unfurl a bright rosy-red in spring, then mature to all shades of hot pink and creamy yellow for the remainder of the season. As spring turns to summer, the leaves become a pale creamy green, their darker green veins standing out sharply. But all spring and summer, new pink leaves continue to open, so the pattern is repeated many times over, with all colors present at once on the tree!
Like the popular dwarf Japanese Maple 'Shaina', 'Geisha' has a bushy, very full, mounded habit with layers upon layers of gorgeous foliage. It grows just 2 inches a year, making it ideal for bonsai and container growth. At maturity (after 15 years or so) it will be just about 5 feet high and 4 feet wide, the perfect size for a foundation planting, small-space display, or large urn.
'Geisha' needs little attention to keep looking its best for decades to come. It prefers light shade, and needs water during periods of drought, but other than that is quite carefree and easy to maintain. Zones 6-9.
