I've been waiting for several years to build up enough stock of this splendid yellow Magnolia, and I'm delighted to offer it at last! It's always been my favorite yellow, both for its extra-late bloomtime and for its exceptionally rich, dark golden flowers. Bred by the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens and a favorite for more than 20 years, it's a reliable classic you can rely on to avoid even those unpredictable late-April cold spells! These flowers are about 3 to 4 inches across, deeply cupped, and arise just as the leaves begin to unfurl, so they aren't concealed by the foliage at all. If you're familiar with the popular yellow Magnolia 'Elizabeth', you'll be glad to hear that 'Yellow Bird' blooms several weeks later than it does -- just about the last Magnolia to show its color in spring! It keeps its color for 2 to 3 weeks, too -- a good way to extend your Magnolia season no matter where you live! And if you're in a chilly climate, where spring frosts kill the buds of most Magnolias, 'Yellow Bird' is THE variety to rely on.
'Yellow Bird' isn't a massive, sprawling tree, but rather a neat, upright specimen about 12 feet high and 15 feet wide at maturity. (Expect it to take 10 to 15 years to reach full size.) It is known for its consistency of bloom and for the deep, rich color of its flowers. A trusted favorite, it thrives in morning sun and afternoon shade. Zones 4-8.
