A Spidery Look for the Holidays!
This South American Amaryllis is a hybrid of H. cybister x H. papilio, a one-of-a-kind parti-colored delight that turns traditional holiday Amaryllis on its ear!
Looking like a Butterfly Amaryllis that's been on a diet far too long, elegant 'Lima' boasts everything that a serious gardener loves. It is the lifework of a noted plant breeder who died before he could release it (and its cousins, among them the stellar 'Ruby Meyer'), and is an utterly unique cross of two Hippeastrum species that complement one another magnificently. Its colors are a bit variable -- that is, you always get burgundy-claret red on the upper petals, pale green on the lower, and some combination of both on the middle, but the proportions and looks change deliciously with every bloom -- and its budding very generous. Its overall look is a bit different from traditional Amaryllis, too -- naked spikes, slender foliage, overall airier silhouette -- so it adds a distinctively different note to the holiday display. You will love it. Absolutely love it.
The flowers reach 6 inches across, their spidery tendrils refusing to conform to any rules of symmetry (thank goodness). Each petal is very lightly and closely scored, so that near the base the dark red can look nearly black, while at the tip it may abruptly turn pale green, as if dipped in paint. Each blooming stalk produces 4 to 6 flowers, and you will adore every one, for no two will be just alike!
'Lima' reaches 18 to 24 inches tall and should bloom within 7 to 10 weeks of planting. It is vigorous and heavy-budded, yet needs no staking. A cross of H. cybister x H. papilio, it has all the drama of the native South American Amaryllis without the heavy breeding and features of the Dutch hybrids. You will love its exotic look, reliable bloom, and attention-getting presence! Order today; we can't guarantee unlimited quantities! Zones 8-11.
