A Double Patty's Plum!
Twice the Petals, Twice the Beauty
Plant Patent #18,609. Everybody loves Patty's Plum, the dark blackberry-purple Poppy. Well, we are delighted to introduce Patty's daughter, a DOUBLE-flowered lighter pinkish-purple version with masses of frilly petals held in a slightly twisted, frazzled pattern. 'Ruffled Patty' outdoes her famous parent in bloom size and textural interest, giving Poppy lovers the opportunity to discover a new form for this magnificent species. Unlike the serrated, Dianthus-like petal tips of Poppies such as Fornsett Summer, 'Ruffled Patty' sets rounded, tongue-shaped petals in great numbers, some streaked with pale lavender and all surrounding a large, dramatic black center. The blooms are easily 6 inches across, and appear abundantly on compact plants just 18 inches wide and, in bloom, 30 inches high. The stems are ultra-strong, too, preventing toppling and providing a few extra days of beauty in the vase or on the plant. Like all Oriental Poppies, 'Ruffled Patty' fares best in very well-drained, sun-soaked soil on the dry side. A deep, rich loam is best, but once established in the garden, it is fairly adaptable. Grow an extra plant or two of this exciting newcomer -- with flowers this large and unique, you will want all you can get! Zones 3-7.
