Fragrant Blooms for Spring and Fall

These long, arching stems emerge from soft gray-blue foliage.

Plant Patent #14,692

These blazing two-tone blooms of rosy-pink and red may not appear in time for Valentine's Day, but they will be among the very first Dicentra to open in the spring garden -- and possibly the last to close in late autumn! Floriferous and very compact, this is a powerful little plant disguised in soft-toned foliage.

The dangling blooms of 'Candy Hearts' are elongated and dramatic, suspended from long, arching stems. Sweetly fragrant, they remain for several weeks, then repeat intermittently in summer before launching another full-scale bloom in autumn. Such bold color is really appreciated in the shade border!

Just 8 to 12 inches high and 12 to 15 inches wide, this plant offers ferny foliage of muted gray-blue, a nice contrast to the lush green tones of other Dicentra. Best grown in groups of at least three, they thrive in partial shade in all but far northern climates, lending their sweet scent and bright blooms to areas of the garden that need it most. Unappetizing to rabbits and deer, the flowers are magnets for butterflies, and their fragrance is much appreciated by surrounding plants. Try 'Candy Hearts' in the front of the border among Hosta and Heuchera. Easy, long-blooming, and so lovely! Zones 3-9.
