Two, Sometimes even THREE, Bloomtimes a Year!
This fresh green foliage, large and leathery, keeps the plant looking great year-round.
A Heart-Leaf Bergenia with two seasons of bloom is an amazing thing, and 'Herbsblute' often gives you THREE! This stunning new variety flowers heavily in spring, repeats dependably in fall, and in cool and mild climates even provides a midsummer show just to keep things interesting! The fresh green foliage does not lose its bright color even in heat and humidity, turning burgundy in late fall and remaining through winter. Absolutely the most colorful Pigsqueak yet! These soft pink blooms on deep red stems really pop out in the spring landscape, appearing before many other perennials have broken dormancy. They appear in small clusters on tall, sturdy stems, the bright green foliage offering a lovely backdrop. They remain for several weeks, then reappear almost as profusely in autumn. Summer bloom, if it occurs, will be sporadic and delightful! The foliage is thick and leathery, almost succulent, held in cabbage-like rosette. It gives Bergenia its common name of Pigsqueak: rub the leaves a certain way between your fingers and they are said to release a sound just like a pig squealing! Evergreen in nearly all climates, they turn burgundy when the cold weather arrives and remain through winter, asking only for a late-winter trim to repair storm damage. 'Herbsblute' reaches a foot high and up to 16 inches wide. It is not a plant for solitary enjoyment; large plantings look spectacular, and you might want to consider mixing it with another newcomer, 'Bressingham White.' Very easy in any soil (even poor ones), this plant needs only pampering its first year and well-draining soil. Over time it becomes very vigorous indeed, withstanding short periods of drought and general neglect admirably! Zones 4-8.
