Spectacular Fall Color
Perfect for the dry shade beneath trees.
The best Epimedium we know for stunning autumn foliage changes, 'Niveum' is also showstopping in spring, when it unfurls new leaves boasting soft red tones among the green. A groundcover cultivar highly recommended as edging or for use beneath trees, it fits well into the Epimedium display, its late blooms extending the spring show and its fall leaves adding another season of beauty to this extraordinary perennial. A cross between E. diphyllum x E. grandiflorum, 'Niveum' sets short-spurred to spurless blooms of pure white very liberally among its fresh green foliage. The blooms don't appear until late spring in most climates, just as midseason bloomers such as E. x rubrum and E. 'Amber Queen' are passing. Their neutral color and late appearance make them splendid additions to a large Epimedium planting, for they gleam brightly, drawing the eye away from fading blooms nearby! But the foliage outdoes the flowers on this lovely low-grower. The new spring leaves offer soft rosy tones, but the fall changes are much bolder, reaching shades of deep red. The color remains for many weeks, really standing out brilliantly in the shade on this 6- to 9-inch-high, 12- to 18-inch-wide plant. 'Niveum' thrives in ordinary to dry soil, and is very low maintenance. You will find it a multi-season delight in the garden. Zones 4-8.
