Merry Stripes and Bright Colors!
Named for the center of Swinging London in the 1960's, this super-floriferous variety lives up to its reputation for bold style!
In keeping with the retro 1960's fashions of today, Carnaby is a hip sensation of a Clematis, with boldly striped blooms in tremendous numbers on plants versatile enough for containers or the garden. When it's time to add a little pizzazz to the patio or partly-shaded garden, rely on this "swinger"! 4 to 5 inches wide, these flowers are a deep rosy-pink, with a wide white edge and a ring of bright maroon stamens in the center of each petal. They arise in incredible numbers -- Carnaby is one of the most floriferous Clematis of all time -- in early summer, continuing for weeks and then followed by charming seedheads. Cut all you like for indoor arrangements; there will be plenty more where those came from! This plant reaches 7 to 9 feet tall, a good size for a container as well as the garden. It is easy to grow in a rich, porous, alkaline soil with plenty of room for the roots to spread. Best performance is when the tops are in full sunlight and the roots are shaded, so apply a generous mulch or a shallow-rooted ground cover near the base of the vine. Very reliable performers once established (they are even left alone by deer, that scourge of the garden!), Clematis take a season or two to get going. Carnaby is a Group II Clematis for pruning purposes. Zones 3-9.
