Finally, a Cold-Hardy Red Coreopsis!
Hardy through zone 4 in the north.
Plant Patent Applied For. You've heard it before -- a new red Coreopsis. But 'Redshift' is very, very different, and a great improvement over all others before it. Not only is its color a changeable blend of bright burgundy and clean yellow, but it is truly cold-hardy, surviving winter in zone 4 without damage. At last -- after nearly a decade of breeding involving 8 distinct Coreopsis species -- we have a cold-hardy red! 'Redshift' is a magnificent flower all on its own. The blooms open with deep red centers, which then mature through all shades of red, pink, and yellow, finally winding up a creamy hue. The red petals are streaked and shot with yellow as well, and no two blooms will look just alike. You'll get much redder color in cooler temperatures, so expect the hot midsummer blooms to look very different from the late spring and late summer to early fall ones! The flowers appear in great numbers on very well-branched plants 30 to 36 inches high (in bloom) and 24 to 30 inches wide. This is the Coreopsis we've all been waiting for -- floriferous, heavily repeating, colorful, and indifferent to cold winters. It was bred by Darrell Probst, so you know the quality's first rate, and is part of a proposed series called Big Bang™. We can't wait to see what's coming next from this terrific breeding! Highly recommended for the border, meadow, and mass planting, 'Redshift' is a sun lover that prefers its soil ordinary and a bit on the dry side. Pamper it the first year to get its root system established, then watch it take off! These flowers are large enough to be cut for the vase, and the sooner you cut or deadhead them, the quicker new blooms appear! Try 'Redshift' with Echinacea in the sunny garden, or pair it with golden-orange Gaillardia 'Oranges and Lemons,' which shares its bicolor look and warm tones. It's also a great choice in front of soaring Baptisia and carefree Hemerocallis in the sunny border or open meadow setting. Expect its blooms to begin in late spring and to continue throughout summer and possibly into autumn! Zones 4-8.
