Hemerocallis 'Majestic Move'
Repeats in late summer!
These giant 6-inch blooms open in midsummer, their thick petals (actually tepals) held out wide and flat so that the flowers appear even larger. Beautifully ruffled all around the edges, these blooms sport central stripes that can appear pinkish in some lights, creamy yellow in others. Very interesting!
The blooms last for several weeks, then reappear in big numbers in late summer, just when the garden needs them most. And this is an extended bloomer, so the flowers actually open the evening before their day of glory, remaining fresh and vibrant for more than 16 hours! Good choice for around the patio or other outdoor entertainment area, because they will be newly-opened just as afternoon turns to evening and it's cool enough to go out and enjoy the garden!
'Majestic Move' offers candelabra-style branching, meaning that several buds are carried on each branch and held out together, creating a much fuller, prettier look. It has a high bud count to begin with, but this habit makes it appear even more densely colorful. Lovely!
Bred in 1993 by Victor Santa Lucia, 'Majestic Move' is a dormant tetraploid, meaning that it will die back completely in winter, protecting it from damage from severe cold and damp. It is much more vigorous, strongly colored, and heavier blooming than its diploid cousins, and has proven very adaptable to stresses from heat and humidity to poor soil and drought. All daylilies are low maintenance, but 'Majestic Move' is particularly well suited to benign neglect!
Expect 'Majestic Move' to reach 2 to 3 feet high and wide. As you know, daylilies spread over time, and should be divided (as easy as a few whacks with the shovel!). You will look forward to increasing your stock of this beautiful variety -- and so will your gardening friends, who will beg for the divisions! Enjoy this beautiful perennial for countless seasons to come. Zones 3-9.
