Lemon Candy Ninebark
Physocarpus opulifolius 'Podaras 3' PP#22,362
Far and away the most compact Ninebark we have grown, this superb gold-leafed cultivar demonstrates excellent tolerance of heat and drought, offers charming white blooms, and keeps its light foliage color all season.
In summer, the gold turns to chartreuse, remaining fresh and colorful until frost. A selection of the native American species, it is quite adaptable to various soils and conditions, reaching just 2 to 2½ feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide in full sun. Easy and supremely colorful!
Lemon Candy is a Ninebark, a North American shrub once known for its huge, rangy habit. Today's newest cultivars have been selected for smaller size, and Lemon Candy is far and away the most compact. You will love the big, serrated and veined leaves and domed trusses of ivory flowers on this stocky shrub!
New spring foliage is bright yellow, maturing to a vivid shade of chartreuse that refuses to go green, even in summer sun. The bright leaves form the perfect backdrop for the blooms, which appear in mid to late spring. So showy, so beautiful, season after season!
Unlike some older varieties, which tend to have weak, slender stems, Lemon Candy sports thick, sturdy branching. It tolerates a bit of drought, but fares best in full sun and well drained, enriched soil. Hardy to -40 degrees F, this is truly a shrub that can hold its own in any setting! Zones 3-7.

Set plants 5 feet apart for hedges or up to 8 feet apart for single plantings. Performs best in full sun in northern areas but needs partial shade in warmer areas. Plant in any average soil (either slightly acidic or alkaline in nature) that is well drained.
To maintain a compact size, cut the entire shrub to the ground in late winter; plants treated in this manner will not flower. If a larger plant or flowers are desired, remove only 1/3 of the total number of older shoots immediately after flowers fade.
