Erigeron pulchellus var. pulchellus 'Lynnhaven Carpet'

A selection of the native American species
If you have a garden trouble spot -- and don't we all? -- consider this selection of our native Erigeron. Discovered in a coastal Virginia garden, 'Lynnhaven Carpet' is a fantastically easy, adaptable perennial that forms a matting evergreen groundcover topped by beautiful daisies in late spring. What could be more delightful?

The foliage is grayish-green and quite long (to 4 inches), held very densely at the base of the plant. This is invaluable for creating a weed-choking, erosion-preventing groundcover you can use on banks, slopes, and poor bare soil throughout your landscape. When not in bloom, 'Lynnhaven Carpet' is just 6 inches high, but spreads 12 to 15 inches wide> Tuck it into "holes" in the border, along the driveway, and in those awkward areas the hose won't reach.

But the best part of 'Lynnhaven Carpet' is the flowers. Appearing on long, slender 12- to 15-inch stems in late spring, they are delicate daisies of palest lavender (they look white in our photo) with a bold fuzzy golden center. The petals are long, slender, and elegant, creating a frilly look that is most pleasing. And they remain for many weeks, bringing in butterflies and admiring stares to your garden!

This perennial is ultra-tough, standing up to poor soil, dry conditions (including dry shade, something very few plants can thrive in), heat, and humidity. It does need good soil drainage, but beyond that, it is carefree. Amazing!

Named for the Lynnhaven River near which it was found, 'Lynnhaven Carpet' was introduced by plantsman Charles Cresson. You will find it a valuable addition to your garden. Order today! Zones 5-8.

Since its founding in 1920, Wayside Gardens has brought the rarest and highest-quality plants to the garden market. Wayside was founded in 1920 by two acclaimed growers who came together to pursue their shared vision of marketing all high-end plants for the serious garden enthusiast. Originally located in Mentor, Ohio, Wayside Gardens swiftly grew a reputation for the highest-quality plants and the most sophisticated clientele. In 1975, Wayside was purchased by the Park Seed Company, and moved to Hodges, SC.  The company has flourished since then, growing to become an undisputed leader in rare and unique plant growing.

Tips for gardening in particularly hot, dry climates:

1. Water with a drip system whenever possible – soak the bed slowly and thoroughly to a depth of 10" to 12".

2. Watering deeply every 3 to 5 days is preferable to a shallow daily watering.

3. Water in the early morning, so foliage has time to dry.

4. Add a 2- to 3-inch layer of mulch or similar material to aid in water retention and help keep the roots cool during hot weather.
