Echinacea purpurea 'Meringue' PPAF

You'll want to stand up and cheer for 'Meringue', a dwarf producing big pom-pom flowers with layers of white, yellow and green! Though standing only 1½ off the ground, the floriferous cultivar produces huge double blooms on a short, upright habit from mid-summer through late summer.

The flowers contain white ray petals surrounding a creamy yellow pom-pom with an apple-green center. The pom-pom grows and turns a lighter shade of yellow as it ages. 'Meringue' is whiter, more floriferous and shorter than 'Coconut Lime' Echinacea, a variety with similar form.

Excellent in decorative containers, gardens or near the front of borders, 'Meringue' brings cheer with its big, light-colored flowers. It makes birds happy, too. Finches and other birds eat the seeds on spent blooms during the winter.

Tips for gardening in particularly hot, dry climates:

1. Water with a drip system whenever possible – soak the bed slowly and thoroughly to a depth of 10" to 12".

2. Watering deeply every 3 to 5 days is preferable to a shallow daily watering.

3. Water in the early morning, so foliage has time to dry.

4. Add a 2- to 3-inch layer of mulch or similar material to aid in water retention and help keep the roots cool during hot weather.
