Mukdenia rossii 'Karasuba'
Small starry white blooms arise in spring, but it's the foliage that really astonishes on this low, spreading perennial.
These large leaves sport 5 to 9 sharply-cut lobes, and emerge in spring a dark green marked with bronze. As the weather warms, the bronze burnishes a rich, deep red that persists all summer and fall. 'Karasuba' is a dense, clumping plant, with layers of this brilliant color, so it really glistens in the partly-shaded garden.
Spring also brings ¼-inch bell-shaped white blooms, which dangle about 4 inches above the foliage, just as on a Heuchera. The flowers add a nice splash of color to the early-season display, calling attention to the new bronze-marked foliage.
'Karasuba' prefers afternoon shade everywhere except the Pacific Northwest, where it can take full sun. It needs cool, moist soil very well-enriched with organics to become established, but once it has made itself at home in the garden, it is so adaptable that it will even thrive in the dry shade beneath trees. It reaches about a foot high and wide within a few seasons, eventually spreading much farther. Zones 4-9.
