Pachysandra procumbens
Evergreen in warm climates, it slowly colonizes the shady garden.
The foliage is quite showy on this low-growing perennial. Large, blue-green and notched, it sports silver veining and spotting on every leaf. The foliage arises quite densely on this plant, forming a thick carpet of felt-like texture and beautiful color.
In late winter and earliest spring, small pinkish-white flowers arise to top the foliage. Persisting for several weeks, they welcome spring to the garden each year, and are quite colorful in the bleak pre-season landscape.
Allegheny Spurge is a slow spreader, reaching 8 to 12 inches high and about a foot wide in part to full shade. It colonizes over time, always forming dense mats of coverage, without holes or bare spots. once established, it tolerates not only drought but heavy clay soils, moving into 'trouble spots' other plants have found too poorly-draining. A very useful trait indeed!
This Pachysandra is reliably evergreen south of zone 6, and is a colorful presence from spring through fall everywhere. Dispense with the overused Japanese species of Pachysandra in favor of this vigorous, dependable, beautiful native! Zones 5-9.
