Short, compact plant needs no staking, and spreads gloriously over time.

A naturally occurring hybrid of P. maculata x P. glaberrima, found growing in Mississippi.
As usual, Nature is leaps and bounds ahead of man's best efforts. After decades of effort by plantsmen to breed compact size and mildew resistance into Phlox, a natural hybrid is found happily growing in hot, humid Mississippi: short, spreading, long-blooming, and completely mildew-free! 'Minnie Pearl'!

A natural cross of P. maculata x P. glaberrima, 'Minnie Pearl' reaches just 12 to 18 inches high in full bloom, with foliage topping out at about 6 to 8 inches tall! The flowerstems are sturdy yet slender, boasting lovely rounded clusters of small, perfect white blooms, sweetly scented and so long-lasting in garden or vase. They begin in mid-spring in many climates, their gleaming white color making the bold Tulips stand out even more dramatically, and they continue into early summer, welcoming the first butterflies of the season and perfuming the sunny garden.

Beneath the blooms, the long, fresh green foliage is lush and absolutely untouched by mildew, looking as good in October as it did in April. 'Minnnie Pearl' spreads slowly, reaching 2 feet wide within two seasons. A native perennial, it is drought-tolerant, has few diseases and pests to plague it, and is widely adaptable.

'Minnie Pearl' was found growing in Mississippi by plantswoman Karen Partlow. It makes a great cutflower, and is also useful as a groundcover and in meadow and wildflower gardens. This is a plant to treasure, and we are honored to offer it to Wayside gardeners this season. Find a place of honor for 'Minnie Pearl' in your landscape this season! Zones 5-9.
