Red Fox Katsura
Cercidiphyllum japonicum 'Red Fox'
A recent Katsura introduction from Germany, 'Red Fox' produces exquisite foliage: new leaves unfurl already a dark bronze-maroon, and gradually change color over the season, taking on green in early summer and eventually fading to a bluish-green by mid summer and a harvest gold in autumn. The heart-shaped leaves acquire their best purple color in full sun. As the leaves fall in autumn, they fill the air with a distinctive scent akin to cr?me br?l?e. This medium-sized, slow-growing shade tree will take decades to reach its full height of about 40 feet tall and 25 feet wide. It has a low canopy, with typically only about 4 feet of clearance at the bottom.'Red Fox' does best in part-to-full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Avoid highly alkaline soils and wide open areas, where winter winds may dry 'Red Fox' out. Water frequently while this Katsura tree becomes established. This low-maintenance Katsura needs little pruning to keep its habit compact and neatly columnar.Zones 4 to 8.
