Large clusters of 2 1/2- to 3 1/2-inch flowers are fragrant and long-lasting.

This Finnish introduction is very dense, with a low, mounding habit.
Syn. 'Pohjolan Tytar.' At last, a Rhododendron that not only flowers dependably in the far north, but offers full, fragrant bloom clusters over a long spring season. Bred in Finland and fully bud-hardy to -30 degrees F, 'Pohjola's Daughter' is long-awaited by gardeners tired of losing season after season of spring blooms to late frosts and cold spells.

The buds arise on this bushy, low-growing, mounded shrub in bright fuchsia-pink, then open to pale pink and mature to white with a smattering of cinnamon-brown freckles. Sweetly fragrant, each blossom is 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 inches wide. They are borne in large, rounded clusters that resemble formal bouquets all over the shrub.

'Pohjola's Daughter' is a hybrid of R. caucasicum 'Cunningham's White' x R. smirnowii Seidel. It is wider than it is tall, usually reaching just 3 1/2 feet high but spreading about 5 feet. Perfect for the foundation, shrub border, or even a low hedge, it thrives in sun to partial shade. The name comes from a character in KALEVALA, the Finnish national epic. Zones 4-8.

Azaleas and Rhododendrons have been interbred since the first plants were scooped out of the dirt, and for a while these "crossbreeds" were even referred to by some ghastly name — Azaleodendrons or the like.

The old rule of thumb used to be that azaleas are deciduous and rhododendrons evergreen, but if that was ever true, it isn't anymore.

The differences between the two are slight, so slight in fact that botanists do not break them into the two groups that gardeners have come to know. Rhododendrons have 10 stamens per flower, while Azaleas have only five. While both can be deciduous, that trait is typically seen more in Azaleas than Rhododendrons. The shape of the leaves is often another indicator, with larger, paddle-shaped leaves typical of Rhododendrons, Azaleas often have smaller, elliptical leaves and trumpet, or tubular-shaped flowers at the ends of the shoots.
