Shaina Japanese Maple
Acer palmatum 'Shaina'
Shaina is ideal for use as a hedge, foundation subject, or border standout. The habit it unusual for Japanese Maple: it branches lushly right down to the ground. Coupled with the maroon to scarlet foliage, this creates a nice "wall" of rich red hues!
But the best show is in autumn, when the weather turns cold and the leaves acquire brighter and brighter tints of pure red. The foliage remains for several weeks before dropping to the ground (and the scarlet pool of color this creates is beautiful as well!). You will treasure Shaina in every season!
Especially choice shrubs or small trees, Japanese Maples are magnificent in form and foliage, delicately textured in spring and summer, and, in many cases, unequalled in fall color. Very tolerant of heat and humidity, they add year-round interest to the garden. Their beauty increases with age making them a lifetime investment in the landscape.
We are pleased to offer this choice Japanese Maple, a proven performer in American gardens. Expect it to grow 4 to 5 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide within 6 to 8 years. Plant in sun to part shade and well-drained, but evenly moist soil. Zones 5-9.

In northern zones, choose a location which receives full sun. Farther south, the location should be partially shaded. Bright sun helps produce the deepest colors in red cultivars. Soil should be rich and well-drained, high in organic content with ample moisture. Shelter from drying winter winds is desirable, particularly in the northern portion of its range.
Formative pruning is desirable, as is spur pruning for those cultivars with interesting bark coloration (A. ‘Sango Kaku’, for example). Such pruning should be done in late summer or early fall and, at the same time, any dead branches should be cut back to live wood. Water well during periods of drought, especially in the first 2 to 3 years after planting.

A Tradition of DistinctionSince its founding in 1920, Wayside Gardens has brought the rarest and highest-quality plants to the garden market. Wayside was founded in 1920 by two acclaimed growers who came together to pursue their shared vision of marketing all high-end plants for the serious garden enthusiast. Originally located in Mentor, Ohio, Wayside Gardens swiftly grew a reputation for the highest-quality plants and the most sophisticated clientele. In 1975, Wayside was purchased by the Park Seed Company, and moved to Hodges, SC. The company has flourished since then, growing to become an undisputed leader in rare and unique plant growing.

Tips for gardening in particularly hot, dry climates:
1. Water with a drip system whenever possible – soak the bed slowly and thoroughly to a depth of 10" to 12".
2. Watering deeply every 3 to 5 days is preferable to a shallow daily watering.
3. Water in the early morning, so foliage has time to dry.
4. Add a 2- to 3-inch layer of mulch or similar material to aid in water retention and help keep the roots cool during hot weather.
