Viola walteri 'Silver Gem'
Native to the Appalachian Piedmont.
The heart-shaped leaves of this perennial are deep olive-green with silver streaks and a purple reverse. Lush and mounding, they add rich color to any setting. And dotted among them are small, delicately striped violet-blue flowers that begin in mid-spring and continue all the way to mid-fall.
The blooms are abundant and eye-catching on plants that stand up to drought beautifully and make a splendid ground cover as well as an accent. Just 3 to 5 inches high, this plant reaches 10 to 15 inches wide, and is especially effective tumbling over rocks or in a terraced garden.
'Silver Gem' has all the native vigor you would expect of our Appalachian Blue Violet. The variegation is splendid and the flower power amazing. Treat your landscape to this vigorous, adaptable selection of an American native species! Zones 5-8.
