The spectacular white flowers on this apple serviceberry are the largest of all the amelanchiers. Borne in early spring, the emerging blooms are pink tinged, fading to white with age. The blooms attract bees and are followed by berries that attract birds. Young finely toothed leaves are purplish in spring, mature to dark green throughout summer, and turn brilliant shades of yellow, orange, and red in fall.
Upright and highly branched, this dense shrub has a symmetrical canopy and can be pruned to grow as a small tree. This superior species suckers less, grows slowly, adapts to a wide range of soils, and tolerates some drought.
The edible berries, similar to blueberries, can be eaten fresh, pressed for juice, dried like raisins, cooked in jams and jellies, or baked in pies, crumbles, and muffins.
Uses: Container, Raised Beds, Buffer, Urban, Specimen, Mixed Bed, Residential Street Tree
