Description / Anemone Meron Bordeaux Windflower Bulbs

Plant Anemone Meron Bordeaux windflower bulbs before the first frost in fall, and early the next summer, they freely flower in large poppy-like blooms with velvety deep-plum color and an iridescent sheen. Borne on long, clear flower stems rising 12 and 18 inches tall, the moody blooms beckon to bees and butterflies and make distinctive and long-lasting early summer bouquets.

An Anemone coronaria species, commonly called windflower, Meron Bordeaux is a small tuberous perennial with a low-growing, mounding habit that works well as a ground cover, especially in rock and woodland gardens. Windflowers are perfect underplanting for roses and shrubs or clusters in garden beds and borders. Meron Bordeaux looks amazing planted in massive sweeping drifts, but they're also ideal for a layered lasagna planting with grape hyacinths and alliums, in garden or containers. Anemone bulbs can also be forced for early-spring indoor displays.

A sun-loving Mediterranean native, windflowers grow best in a sunny to partially shady location. Windflowers grow well in most soil types, but they prefer medium moist, well-draining soil with a slightly acidic pH. Bulbs will rot in consistently soggy soil. To jump start the bulbs' development, soak them in lukewarm water overnight before planting. Plant the Meron Bordeaux anemone bulbs 3 to 6 inches apart and 2 to 3 inches deep. Or for massive sweeps of blooms, plant about 16 bulbs per square foot. As soon as growth appears, feed the bulbs with Espoma Organic® Bulb-tone® Bulb and Flower Food. Deer tend to leave windflowers alone.
