Description / Anemone 'Meron Bordeaux' Windflower Bulbs

Plant Anemone 'Meron Bordeaux' bulbs in fall (warm climates) or early spring after the last frost (cold climates), and in late spring to early the next summer, the bulbs bloom in large, open-faced flowers with a purple center and dark maroon petals that have an iridescent sheen and can appear almost black. Borne singly atop long, sturdy stems up to 12 to 18 inches tall, the rich and velvety, poppy-like blooms make long-lasting cut flowers and attract pollinators to the garden, including butterflies.

A Anemone coronaria cultivar, commonly called wind flower, 'Meron Bordeaux' is rhizomatous perennial (Zones 7-10) with a clumping, mounded habit of finely divided, ferny, medium green foliage. Low growing, it makes a gorgeous ground cover and is a good choice for a woodland garden or a rock garden. 'Meron Bordeaux' is shown to best effect when planted in large, sweeping drifts, with about 16 bulbs per square foot; but it also looks great planted in containers and decorative pots. Late daffodils and later blooming tulips are good companions for wind flowers.

'Meron Bordeaux' anemone is extremely easy to grow. It isn't picky about the soil it's planted in, as long as it's freely draining. But it grows best in a sunny spot; however, it tolerates some light shade, especially in hot summer climates. Fertilize 'Meron Bordeaux' wind flower in spring when foliage begins to push through the soil. This wind flower is deer and rabbit resistant.

Plant 'Meron Bordeaux' anemone bulbs 3 to 6 inches apart and 2 to 3 inches deep. Spring-flowering bulbs are hardy and require a "dormant" period of cold temperatures to stimulate their root development. But in Zones 3-6, the bulbs should be lifted in fall and overwintered inside.

The small corms must be soaked in lukewarm water for several hours, preferably overnight, before planting.
