Description / Amsonia Arkansas Blue Star

At last, Amsonia Arkansas Blue Star gets the recognition it so richly deserves! Named the 2011 Perennial Plant of the Year, it is suddenly on everyone's wish list. We're pleased to make Amsonia Arkansas Blue Star available here, and to add our voice to the chorus of praise for this low maintenance, deer- and drought-resistant native perennial. For multi-season interest in color, texture, and form, there's nothing to beat it!

Every season brings a new color show with this delightfully easy, hard-working native plant. In late spring and early summer, masses of tiny, sky-blue blooms add cool tones to the sunny garden. In summer, the finely-cut, feathery dark green foliage forms a rich backdrop for your showy annuals and perennials. And in fall, the leaves turn a blazing golden-yellow that rivals Japanese Maples for intensity and beauty!

Amsonia Arkansas Blue Star Flower is a modest little plant, just 3 feet tall and 4 feet wide, with a bushy, unfussy habit that gives little hint of the riches it has in store for you. A good neighbor in the border or bed (it is not invasive, but can hold its own with competing roots), it is especially attractive planted among <#prodlink#"48052">ornamental grasses and in front of fragrant shrubs such as <#prodlink#"46709">Clethra 'Ruby Spice,' which not only shares its sweet scent with Amsonia but also participate in the fall foliage show!

Content in any well-drained soil receiving full sun to light shade, Amsonia Arkansas Blue Star Flower tolerates dry soil and drought once established. It is generally unpalatable to deer, but butterflies and bees simply cannot get enough. Soft to the touch, billowy and beautiful, is an all-season investment in the landscape. Plant several -- spacing them about 3 feet apart -- for a glorious ribbon of fall color! Zones 5-9.

Arkansas Blue Star is a STAR!
Review by Sharon
I bought ten of these a couple of years ago to plant by a wall surrounding a pool and they have performed beautifully where I planted them. They require very little of me, yet look just beautiful.

Amateur Review
Review by Jay E Baldwin
This was my first ever online plant purchase. The whole idea of mail order shrubs is whacky to me. I'm probably the least qualified to comment. Let's call this a common sense review. I ordered six Blue Stars. They arrived four days after shipping, bare root and packaged in snug little bundles of straw. The instructions are clear: don't unwrap the bundles until you're ready to plant. Keep them moist. I wetted the box they were shipped in and put it all in the shade. The next day I unwrapped each bundle and put the plants in a bucket of water per the instructions for about 8 hours while I was at work. Roots looked great, tiny plants looked healthy, I planted them. It was that easy. This'll be their first growing season. I'll see how they do. For their part, Wayside was great. Price, service, quality all good, I hope my gardening skills are as good.

Magnificent
Review by southcakboi
The Amsonia can be late to put out new growth in the spring. For a minute there, I was thinking mine might be a goner. It can also take a little time to mature but once it does it is truly a magnificent plant. Such a pleasure enjoying the airy foliage in the summer breeze!

Amazing shrub that is beautiful from spring thru fall
Review by Carolyn Pittman
though the name is long this shrub is a visual delight. in the spring delicate blue flowers appear, in the summer the foliage is a soft green and in the fall it turns on its spectaular changing color. I get many inquiries about this shrub as very few people have it in their gardens - it is a worthwhile investment. mine is planted near the front porch but give it the room it needs. as the description states, hubrichtii is not invasive.
