Description / Astilbe 'Peaches and Cream' False Spirea
Astilbe 'Peaches and Cream' is a midsize, shade-loving false spirea that grows 22 to 26 inches tall and begins blooming in late spring. This elegant plant produces elongated, plume-like flower clusters composed of hundreds of tiny blossoms that open in succession. And 'Peaches and Cream' plumes change color throughout the growing season, turning from white to pink and finishing a shade of apple blossom as they mature, giving the plant a multicolored effect. The plumes also turn a rich caramel color as they dry on the plant, adding textural interest for months. Carried on tall, sturdy stalks above feathery, fern-like foliage, the vibrant and fragrant plumes are stunning as cut flowers for fresh or dried arrangements. When left in the garden, they attract and sustain bees and butterflies over their long blooming season.
An Astilbe x arendsii variety, commonly called false spirea, 'Peaches and Cream' is a hardy, rhizomatous, clump-forming perennial that thrives in Zones 4-8 and withstands adverse conditions better than most other false spirea. Although relatively slow to establish, it provides years of beauty once settled. Planted in groups or massed, 'Peaches and Cream' astilbes make excellent middle-of-the-border plants or ground cover, and given some support, it may even climb. 'Peaches and Cream' is a must-have in shade and woodland gardens but also adapts well to container gardening.
'Peaches and Cream' astilbe thrives in moderate climates with moist conditions, though it can struggle in excessively hot summers. The plant is adaptable and low maintenance, growing best in part shade to dappled sunlight. It tolerates full shade in warmer regions and full sun in cooler climates, but in hot areas, afternoon shade is crucial to prevent foliage burn. Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during hot weather or drought, and ensure it is rich, well-draining, and slightly acidic with a pH around 6.0. Fertilize at planting and each spring to encourage the formation of their striking flower plumes. Naturally deer and rabbit resistant, it is a durable choice for many gardens.
Plant Astilbe 'Peaches and Cream' roots in spring, placing them 1½ to 2 inches deep and spacing them 18 to 24 inches apart.
