Highly popular and a great choice for shady areas, 'Superba' is considered to be one of the very best, if not the best, astilbe. This tall variety, up to 5 feet high, has strong stems that hold dramatic purple plumes above the fern-like foliage. Mahogany hued spring foliage matures to dark green in summer. Plumes appear in late summer and remain throughout winter, turning a rich caramel color. They make brilliant additions to cut or everlasting arrangements.

Although this perennial is at its best in shady areas with moist soil—perfect for waterside and wet woodlands—it can be planted in full sun in regions with cool, wet summers (it doesn't mind having its feet a little wet), but shade is important in hotter climates. The plant is low maintenance and repels deer and rabbits. But butterflies love it.

Shown to best effect when grouped, the plant will also spread by rhizomes and can be divided every 2 to 4 years. Combining with astilbe varieties that bloom at different times and in different colors keeps a colorful display going throughout the season.
