Rhododendron of the Year Award of the American Rhododendron Society for the Great Lakes and South Central regions.
Very cold hardy, 'Golden Lights' is part of the Northern Lights series developed to withstand cold temperatures as low as -35 degrees Fahrenheit.
Flamboyant and fragrant, this deciduous azalea injects bold color into the garden or landscape. In spring, it blooms in generous trusses brimming with up to 12, 2-inch, bright golden yellow flowers before the olive-green foliage appears. In fall, leaves turn bronze purple.
As a sterile plant, it does not spread or sucker. It's a fine specimen or container plant, but its compact, rounded, 4' x 4', habit lends itself to massing in perennial beds, foundation plantings, and shrub or mixed borders. It can tolerate considerable sun, preferably morning sun, but favors filtered sunlight to bright shade in the afternoon. Attracts bees and butterflies.
