Wisteria 'Blue Moon'

Purple Clusters Bloom Three Times Per Year!

A remarkable cultivar of our native Kentucky Wisteria, 'Blue Moon' is cold-hardy to -40 degrees Fahrenheit with no loss of flowering ability and reblooms to assure you of fragrant flowers for months. Vigorous, quick-growing, and tirelessly floriferous, this Wisteria produces large, showy, lilac-blue flowers held in foot-long racemes like enormous clusters of grapes. The fragrance is sweet and intense, so plant Blue Moon where it can share its scent with garden visitors and near open windows and doors! The first flush of bloom is in early summer, with a brief rest before repeats. Imagine all the flowers you will have for vases as well as garden enjoyment!

'Blue Moon' is also fully hardy, not only able to withstand severe winters but to bloom afterwards. Bred in Minnesota, it has weathered -40 degrees Fahrenheit without damage.

Blue Moon is a vigorous, quick-growing vine, reaching 25 feet long within just a few years. It needs no pruning, and only should be trimmed back if necessary after the final flowering. Let it race across pergolas, over arches, and up trellises and other strong supports, dangling its huge blooms along the way. A fully-blooming 'Blue Moon' is a breathtaking sight!

Give this vine as much sunlight as possible for best flowering. It flourishes in moist, well-drained soil enriched with compost and other organics. Zones 3-9.

Healthy Plant Arrived
Debbie Meeks from WV wrote on May 08, 2014:

My Blue Moon Wisteria arrived on Wednesday. Upon opening the box I was pleased with the care they took in boxing them up. Plenty of cushioning in the box to keep them safe. Once getting the plants out I found them to be of top quality and am very well pleased. I bought 2 of these to replace 2 of another variety (purchased from local green house) which have been growing for 5 yrs and have never bloomed. I am anxious to see these to showcase their beauty in my yard.

Set out plants at least 6 feet apart, in a well-drained, humusy soil. Full sun assures optimum bloom; Wisteria also prefers locations with southern or western exposures.

Avoid nitrogenous fertilizers, which will produce exces sive vegetation at the expense of flowering. Instead, yearly applications of super phosphate should be made in the fall.

To Prune:

Allow one leader shoot to grow from the end of each main framework branch. Cut these back – best if done in winter – by half. In the summer, pinch side shoots to 6 or 7 leaves, and pinch back side shoot branchlets to first or second leaf.

Follow this procedure for several years, until the plant has filled its desired space; thereafter, only the side shoots will need pruning. In winter, cut these back to spurs 1 to 3 inches from the base and eliminate dead wood and suckers.

To Prune to a Standard:

Prune to one strong main stem and attach to a sturdy stake. Continue to cut off all shoots except the main stem, allowing top growth to remain. When trunk reaches desired height, pinch out top growth, then allow branches to grow from upper portion, while pinching side shoots in summer and pruning in winter as described above.

A Tradition of Distinction

Wayside Difference Since its founding in 1920, Wayside Gardens has brought the rarest and highest-quality plants to the garden market. Wayside was founded in 1920 by two acclaimed growers who came together to pursue their shared vision of marketing all high-end plants for the serious garden enthusiast. Originally located in Mentor, Ohio, Wayside Gardens swiftly grew a reputation for the highest-quality plants and the most sophisticated clientele. In 1975, Wayside was purchased by the Park Seed Company, and moved to Hodges, SC.  The company has flourished since then, growing to become an undisputed leader in rare and unique plant growing.

Unparalleled Selection

Wayside's horticulturists travel the world in search of new and unusual plant cultivars and proudly offer the garden industry’s most sophisticated selection of high quality and rare perennial plants, bulbs, trees, shrubs, roses, vines, and indoor plants. Beginning with ties to the Dutch family bulb business in Holland, our horticulturists have developed close relationships with perennial and bulb growers throughout the United States and Europe, providing access to many rare and unique garden treasures. Throughout our history we have had the pleasure of introducing numerous exotic foreign and domestic plant cultivars to the American garden market. The Wayside collection of new and exclusive plant products is so preeminent that the catalog has long been lauded in the industry and is even used as a reference work in horticultural schools.

Larger Containers & Well Established Root Systems

We use larger containers and grow bigger plants than other nurseries, leading to greater root strength. Where appropriate, Wayside Gardens propagates our plants vegetatively rather than from seed, to ensure the plants possess the correct form and are true to variety, like a true double form, as opposed to the single or semi-double forms that may result from seed propagation.
