Description / Caladium 'White Christmas' Bulbs
'White Christmas' is a strap leaf caladium grown for its dramatically variegated foliage. A highly popular variety, it's beloved for its oversized heart-shaped leaves. Distinctive and decorative, the elongated silvery white leaves have complex dark green veins and borders and appear almost luminous in shady garden spots and moonlight gardens. 'White Christmas' may produce small, calla-like, light pink or white flowers (spathes) throughout summer, but the flowers are usually hidden and considered insignificant. Typically, they are removed to preserve the plant's energy for its big, beautiful leaves.
A Caladium bicolor and Brazilian beauty, also known as angel wings, 'White Christmas' is a stunning tropical plant that thrives in warm, humid conditions, growing naturally along river banks and in open forest areas. Hardy in Zones 10-11, it will not survive in prolonged temperatures below 65°F. But it can be enjoyed as a houseplant or as a summer bulb in cooler climates. Whether planted in naturalistic groups or masses, this caladium adds charm to beds, borders, hanging baskets, window boxes, and patio containers. It's a showy accent and its bold foliage also makes it a standout centerpiece in mixed garden planters.
'White Christmas' caladium is remarkably easy to grow and low maintenance. It flourishes in shady to dappled shade areas but tolerates more sun than many other caladium varieties, especially in cooler regions. This plant thrives in organically rich, neutral to slightly acidic (pH 5.5-6), evenly moist soil and requires regular watering to prevent drying out. However, these plants are susceptible to root rot and should never be oversaturated. As a heavy feeder, it benefits from frequent fertilization. Deer resistant and hardy with proper care, 'White Christmas' will come back year after year.
To plant 'White Christmas' caladium bulbs, wait until all danger of frost has passed and the spring soil has warmed. Space the bulbs 6 to 8 inches apart and plant them 1½ to 2 inches deep, with the rounded side featuring "eyes" facing upward. For an earlier start, grow the tubers indoors in pots or flats filled with moist peat moss or vermiculite, then transplant them outside once temperatures rise. Removing the main "eye" before planting encourages a fuller, rounder growth habit.
In colder climates, lift the tubers in the fall after the foliage has died back or just before the first frost. Store them in a dry, cool location where temperatures remain above 45°F. For container-grown caladiums, bring the plants indoors to overwinter.
