Attractive, Drought-Resistant Grasses

Common throughout the world, Carex are drought-resistant grasses often supplying attractive colors of foliage in shades of green, red and brown. The perennials include a culm, a flower-bearing stalk typically unbranched and erect. Flowers come in various number and sizes with leaves varying from fine to broad in many textures. The defining structure of Carex is the perigynium, a bottle-shaped bract surrounding female flowers. The fruit is a dry, one-seeded nut. Tolerant of shady areas, Carex is often used in wildlife habitat restoration and dry environments.
