Description / Cercis 'Ruby Falls'

The Ruby Falls Redbud is one of the most beautiful weeping Redbuds that you will find. It is small in size, yet forms quite elegantly and will be ready to catch your attention. The blooms show up in spring before the foliage. You will get lavender colored flowers sprouting from red stems. They will stay around for a few weeks before heart shaped maroon red leaves make their entrance close to the center of the tree.

As the season progresses into summer, you will notice that the beautiful foliage will start changing colors and turn into shades of dark green, combined with violet streaks. These purple hints will stick around throughout the entire season and will even be there during fall, only tapering off when the colder winter temperatures arrive. The Ruby Falls Redbud is a product of researchers at North Carolina State University and is a relatively young plant, having been developed in 2009. It can reach between 6 and 8 feet high and 6 feet wide, making it a dwarf tree that is quite easy to take care of.

When I was sent this, it was an empty stick. My husband and neighbors all made fun of my little stick. I made sure I planted it with good soil and it grew well the first year and they all have eaten their words, they were amazed and love it. After 3? years, it is doing great and I have strangers that compliment me on it all the time!

I have had my Ruby Falls for 3 years now and and it is just amazing. Beautiful pink blossoms in the spring and purple heart shaped leaves adorn the waterfall weeping branches through out the growing season. My Ruby Falls has grown about a 1.5' (4 feet now), and has filled out spectacularly. This is a focus piece to any garden.

Fairy-tale tree 0 people found this helpful

We bought one of these several years ago, it's absolutely gorgeous! It topped out at about 5' tall. The branches 'weep' beautifully, the dark bark and purple flowers in spring are stunning, and the purple-red heart shaped leaves are so perfect it's hard to believe this is a real, live tree! It's a total specimen plant-pick a spot to highlight it and you will receive tons of compliments, everyone who walks by wants to know what it is. Also, japanese beetles have ignored it and it's been hearty and healthy throughout droughts, excessive rains, heatwaves and polar vortexes. The only thing to watch out for is staking it-the large leaves and slender branches can turn it into a bit of a 'sail', so if it's in a windy spot I'd suggest a stake (or two) until it's really sturdy. Plus it's a native plant! Can't say enough good things about this sweet little tree, you will fall in love with it.
