Description / Aesculus parviflora
Native to Georgia, Alabama and northern Florida, Aesculus parviflora, also known as bottlebrush buckeye, is one of the best flowering shrubs for the summer. That is a good characteristic, considering its native homes are in three of the most southern states: Georgia, Alabama and Florida. It has a dense, mounded multi-stemmed shrub that can grow as tall as 12 feet. Some of its best features include green leaves that grace cylindrical panicles of white flowers with pinkish filaments and red anthers.
Blooms that appear mid-summer can be spectacular because of the glossy pear-shaped encased nuts. By autumn, foliage turns yellow and remains undisturbed by disease or pests. All this means is the bottlebrush buckeye becomes an excellent specimen for your lawn. Plant it in groups or as shrub borders. It also works well in woodland areas.
