Description / Babiana Mixed Baboon Flower Bulbs
Babiana Mixed contains a colorful blend of baboon flowers that bloom for 3 to 5 weeks in summer. Borne on dark green foliage stems that rise 6 to 12 inches tall, clusters of 2-inch, funnel-shaped flowers bloom in a mix of blue, magenta, pink, purple, red, and whitebut no 2 packs are alike. The blossoms have a lemony scent and make excellent cut flowers for kitchen table bouquets or for accents in mixed floral arrangements.
This mix contains varieties from the Babiana genus, commonly called baboon flowers, that are hardy in Zones 8-10. For the best effect, plant groups of 10 to 15 baboon flower bulbs, preferably 15 per square foot, in beds, borders, and containers.
Babiana Mixed varieties are easy to grow in a sunny to partially sunny location with loamy or sandy soil, but the soil must be freely draining. Plant the bulbs (corms) 4 inches apart and 4 inches deep, with the pointed side upwards. In the Deep South, where the bulbs will overwinter in the garden, do not water after flowering when the leaves turn brown. Let the plants go dormant for about two months before resuming watering for next year's growth cycle.
